English Tanka Poetry – Feelings of Autumn

early autumn sun

shining through the distant mist

throwing dark shadows

in harmony with the air

living in dreamland again

English Tanka Poetry – a Verse that consists of five units, usually in the following pattern of 5-7-5-7-7 which is syllables.

What is a syllable?

  1. a unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or a part of a word; for example, there are two syllables in water and three in inferno.

The first three lines (5/7/5) are the upper phase. This upper stage is where you create an image in your reader’s mind.

The last two lines (7/7) of a Tanka poem are called the lower phase. The final two lines should express the poet’s ideas about the image that was created in the three lines above.

lake reflections shine
showing the chill of winter
hills bathe in cold ice
remembering school mornings
when the air was very sharp

waving smiling face

in the gentle frosty breeze

waiting for me to pick them

Winter Tanka Poems

Winter  Tanka Poems

autumn is over
snow flurries begin to fall
golden moments gone
now celebrating winter
without winter no springtime

water tumbling down
streams rise high as the rain falls
pounding rocks rolling
new path is formed across fields
mother nature changed the scene

chilly winter day
garden was spectacular
with dusk approaching
cool air chilling the late blooms
some will not shine tomorrow

trees show many signs
true lovers of the moist earth
flourishing clean leaves
watching droplets of water
moisturising the roots below

clouds approaching fast
the swell was getting bigger
whipping the coastline
as the sea took on revenge
of a incoming rain storm
